Unique Selling Proposition

Are your customers, employees and vendors clear on the very purpose for the existence of your company?

Can your people provide a one-sentence answer to why someone would want to do business with you (please don’t say because of quality and service, everyone says that)?

Are all of your promotional materials clear and consistent?

Authoring a Unique Selling Proposition (USP) for your operations, products lines or services is the number one most important step to bringing the fundamentals of marketing into your company.

The objective of the statement is to have the reader connect his or her need with the implied solution offered in your USP.

The overall purpose of a well thought-out USP is to motivate a prospect to take action by seeking more information.

Components of the USP usually:

  • Describes the likely customer
  • Illustrates the problem
  • Highlights the solution
  • Presents differences
  • Promises or guarantees something

The central components of the USP becomes the foundation of the 30-second elevator speech.
